Increase the Value of Your Home With Paint!

November 4, 2008 - Updated: November 7, 2008

Are you about to sell your home and are you looking for ways to increase the value and selling price of your property? If you answered yes to this question then you should consider painting the important areas of your home. Painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to increase your home's value and is well worth your time and effort. Let's take a look at what you can do with paint.

The first thing that you should know is that paint and painting have evolved with the times. Paint used to be an all-purpose product which you would use on just about any surface. The days of all-purpose paint are long gone, and now there is a particular kind of paint for almost any surface. If you have a wood floor, then there is a particular paint for that surface. If you have a concrete floor then you will have to choose another type.

Do you need to paint appliances? Once again you can get a paint designed especially for this purpose. Think of all the different surfaces in your home, and then you will get an idea of the variety that is possible and available.

While this degree of choice is good, it can also be confusing. The best thing to do is to look at your home and make a list of the surfaces that are worn out and need repainting. The next step is to visit a paint dealer and discuss your list with him or her. The paint dealer can help you to precisely choose the best paints for the surfaces that you need to do.

Once you have your paint be sure to read the instructions carefully. In fact, it makes sense to read the instructions before you leave the paint shop. If you have any questions, ask the dealer and also make sure that you have the materials that are necessary to complete the job properly.

Paints are sometimes toxic or flammable so it is important to read the safety instructions as well and do your painting with proper ventilation.

While painting can really transform rooms, it cannot correct defects in the surfaces. Before you apply the coat of paint you will have to roll up your sleeves and fill holes and cracks. After you have filled holes and cracks, use sandpaper to make everything smooth.

What I have mentioned above are the general instructions, now here are some tips for painting the specific areas of your home.

If you are painting outdoors then get the right paint for the surface you will be handling and be sure that it can withstand the weather conditions in your area. The best way to make the right choice is to ask your paint store specialist.

In your basement you should get latex masonry paint. Paints can help to fight dampness and make your basement waterproof, if you get the right paint and apply it carefully. However, painting alone can't solve all waterproofing problems.

If you are painting the concrete floors then you will have to clean the floors well before applying the paint. It is best to clean the floors with a cleaner recommended by the paint manufacturer or your paint specialist.

It is best to use heat resistant enamels when painting pipes or basement surfaces that will get hot during the year.

In your bathroom and kitchen, I would advise you to use enamel rather than flat paints. Both of these areas are subject to moisture and enamel resists moisture better than flat paints. Surfaces covered with enamel paints are also easier to clean.

That's the general picture. Proper painting will certainly increase the value of your home. If you are about to sell and want to get the best possible price for your property, then it makes a lot of sense to do some painting now.
